Depending on where you do your Polar Bear Plunge, you may need some sort of permit or official authorization. If there is any question about a permit for your Plunge, here are some suggested local resources to check with:
- Town or City Clerk
- Police Station
- Parks and Recreation Office
- Local area lawyers
- Local non-profits or other groups that have organized events in the past
The Chesapeake Climate Action Network has not found it necessary for participants to sign any sort of liability release in our past two Polar Bear Plunges. Generally those willing to take the Plunge are self-selecting, and if they have any concerns about health or liability issues they will simply pledge money for somebody else to take the Plunge, and/or watch from the shore. (Not everyone who participates needs to actually take the Plunge, and supporters like these are great for cheering on your plungers!)
We recommend this approach, but if you still have concerns about liability issues, consult with liability experts in your area for the proper legal information.
